Ebook About
Introducing an extraordinary and original writer whose first novel explores the intersections of grief and rage, personal strength and healing--and what we owe one another.Fern seeks refuge from her mother’s pill-popping and boyfriends via Soul Train; Gwin finds salvation in the music of Prince much to her congregation’s dismay and Jesenia, miles ahead of her classmates at her gifted and talented high school, is a brainy and precocious enigma. None of this matters to Boss Man, the monster who abducts them and holds them captive in a dilapidated house in Queens. On the night they are finally rescued, throngs line the block gawking and claiming ignorance. Among them is lifetime resident Miss Metropolitan, advice columnist for the local weekly, but how could anyone who fancies herself a “newspaperwoman” have missed a horror story unfolding right across the street? And why is it that only two of the three girls—now women—were found? The mystery haunts the two remaining “victim girls” who are subjected to the further trauma of becoming symbols as they continuously adapt to their present and their unrelenting past. Like Colson Whitehead's The Nickel Boys, Ferrell’s Dear Miss Metropolitan gives voice to characters surviving unimaginable tragedy. The story is inventively revealed before, during, and after the ordeal in this singular and urgent novel.

Book Dear Miss Metropolitan: A Novel Review :

The author's very, very "odd" style of writing forced me to stop reading (at several "chapters" into it). I'm sure there is a very good story here, but becaues of the writing style- I'm not sure I'll ever return to reading it. So sorry- I really wanted to like/love it.
Carolyn Ferrell, author of “Dear Miss Metropolitan”, is an award winning author for short form fiction. Her affinity for this style of writing is evident in DMM. There are so many breaks throughout this book that aren’t really chapters. Some are one line long, others a few lines that resemble a poem, a “note to self” or a schedule of events but each will have a bolded heading at the top of the page. Some of those headings are hard to decipher because of an illusive literary reference or an abbreviation that could be extrapolated multiple ways. I found these things difficult and impeded the reading experience. The disjointed aspects are absolutely a WIN for Ferrell. She tried something new with writing this book and this is good, experimental fiction. If the reader can preserve, her style will draw you in and mimic the fractured psyche of the three tortured girls; very uncomfortable. POV bounces around, (but is clearly marked), giving voice to most of the key players. From Fern’s brother, Bud, we can see the depth of dysfunction and stunning lack of family & love that colored their childhood and beyond.Fern, Gwinnie and perhaps Jesenia and the baby, survived conditions that were seemingly incompatible with human life. It happened in a small house in a close neighborhood full of people that had, (and still do), lived there for years; right under their collective noses. How does that happen? Miss Metropolitan is one of those neighbors - an old school, almost obsolete reporter at a struggling paper. This story could change everything. After being rescued from 10 years of horrific abuse by “Boss Man”, Fern and Gwinnie’s story is only half told. The remainder of the book looks at their recovery and return to society. The timeline bounces back and forth to fill in storylines and contemporary “helpers” arrive to capitalize. Lest you think it’s all bad, it’s not. There’s a nurse who’s sent straight from heaven to champion for the girls at every turn.Triggers abound in this book so if you’re sensitive in any way to to psychological, sexual or physical abuse, this is not the book for you. It’s also got rough language, homosexual shaming, drug and alcohol abuse. It also has an amazing cast of resilient young women you’re not likely to ever forgetšŸ“šRead & Reviewed from a GoodReads GiveAway l
