I loved Beautifully Broken Spirit, but I found nothing beautiful about Broken Pieces. The cookie-cutter plot resembles dozens of others I've read, in which a handsome man falls into lust/love with a beautiful woman with emotional issues. They have lots of steamy sex before the hero rescues the heroine from the clutches of an evil villain. Her issues are resolved, and the story ends with an obligatory HEA.(WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!) In this book, our hero (Walker) is a hunky cop who falls into lust with Taylor, a beautiful newcomer in town. Taylor was so emotionally "broken" by her mother's death that she vows never to need or love anyone again, because it hurts when they leave. I quickly tired of Taylor's obsessive grief over her mother's death. I know it hurts to lose a mother, but Taylor's extreme self-pity was just too much.Walker is also familiar with death; his first love was kidnapped and murdered by an unknown assailant ten years earlier. Recently, other young women are turning up dead at the hands of a mysterious serial killer, so you'd think our local cop would be busy tracking down the murderer, right? Nope. He spends most of his time hanging out with Taylor, hoping to get her into his bed. They start having sex in Chapter 28--the first of several explicit scenes. (Frankly, if you skip the entire first half of the book, you won't miss much.)The plot continues with more sex. Our serial killer strikes again, leaving the mutilated body of Walker's ex-girlfriend in the woods. Does he care enough to join the search for the killer? Heck, no. He takes Taylor out to dinner instead! (They have more sex.) The bad guy tries to kidnap another young woman, and Walker (who joins the futile search this time) is shot but recovers.Predictably, at 80% in, we're treated to a bit of far-fetched excitement when our killer kidnaps Taylor and carries her off to a cave in the woods, where he plans to torment her until she dies. Walker and his best friend (Tuck) arrive in the nick of time and enter the dimly lit cave, where the killer is holding Taylor in front of him with a knife pressed to her throat. Does Walker kill him with a single shot to the head? Of course he does! His literal "shot in the dark" hits its target perfectly. (Hey, it's fiction, after all.)As is usually the case in these cookie-cutter plots, the serial killer turns out to be a handsome, well-liked member of the community. This particular guy has even been dating Walker's sister (Jensen) for several months. Seriously? No one in the entire town realized they were harboring a sadistic, sociopathic killer for ten years? Does every small town have a home-grown version of Ted Bundy? If you read enough of these books, you'll start to think so. And this plot has a special twist: the killer's sister--also a secret sociopath--initiated some of the murders in order to eliminate her supposed rivals for Walker's love. Crazy? Oh, yeah.Finally, Taylor's "broken pieces" are mended by Walker's love, and they live Happily Ever After. It's not a bad story, but the overly familiar plot spoiled it for me, as did the dozens of annoying f-bombs dropped throughout. Couldn't the author come up with better alternatives to that one word? Unlike Beautifully Broken Spirit, this book is not a keeper. Two stars overall. I somewhat enjoyed the book. I loved Walker but Taylor, I couldn’t connect with her. She’s grieving the loss of her mother but she’s retreated so far in to herself that it came off unrealistic and honestly very frustrating. Losing a parent is horrible. No one wants to experience that. However, the level of grief was just unrealistic. I just couldn’t relate and it was honestly annoying and whiny after 20%. Other than that I loved Walker and his family was great. I equally loved Taylor’s friends.
